

Born February 6, 1922 in Aledo to Andrew and Mary (Plank) Garrett, he married Betty Jean Newton on October 23, 1943 in Bloomington. She died May 13, 2008 in East Peoria. He also was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kathy Colvin; two granddaughters; one great-grandson and a daughter-in-law, Carol T. Garrett.
Surviving are one son, John M. (Jane) Garrett of Pekin; one daughter, Janet E. Hall of Morton; eleven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several "adopted" daughters.
He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
A retired member of Teamsters & Chauffeurs Union Local 627 in Peoria, John was a truck driver for over 40 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of William Schaefer American Legion Post 44 in Pekin. John was proud to be a part of the Greater Peoria Honor Flight in 2013 and that he was chosen to help in placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
He was a longtime volunteer at the South Side Mission’s Mission Mart in Morton. He loved to tinker and could fix just about anything.
He was a member of Danvers Mennonite Church and had attended Groveland Missionary Church.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, with military rites provided by the United States Air Force and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
