

Born April 5, 1932 in Delavan to Fred and Mary (Sparrow) Hartwig, she married Joe Berchtold on January 29, 1949 in Delavan. He died January 22, 1975 in Green Valley. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, William Hartwig.
Surviving are one son, Steven (Cathy) Berchtold of Mackinaw; one daughter, Mary “Sis” (Steve) Rearden of Pekin; three grandchildren, Jeff (Rosanna) Berchtold of St. Cloud, FL, and Toby Berchtold and Kristin Maher, both of Pekin; six great-grandchildren, Damon, Zaylee, Bryan, Michelle, Ashley, and Taylor; one sister, Idella Lee of Green Valley; one brother, Ken (Deb) Hartwig of St. Augustine, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary and her husband, Joe, ran the Co-Op in Green Valley for many years where she was the bookkeeper. She later worked as a clerk at JC Penney’s and then Bergner’s, both at the Pekin Mall. She also worked at Central Hair Salon in Pekin as the bookkeeper.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Delavan, and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.
Mary enjoyed crocheting and fishing. She was known for the roses she grew for many years. When she could no longer grow them, she collected ceramic roses.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 13, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Delavan with Monsignor Timothy Nolan as the celebrant. A visitation will be held Friday at the church from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Burial will be at Green Valley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, where a service will follow at 7 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Brent Hartwig, her nephew, officiating. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
