Richard H Appleyard

Born January 2, 1932 in Peoria to Ernest Hollingsworth and Katheryn Frances (Lambie) Roberts, he married Anita Evon Stephens on December 27, 1974 in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Ernest (Cathy) Appleyard of Goodfield and Bill (Debbie) Salisbury of California; eight daughters, Carrie (Rob) Updike and Marsha (Tom) Sparks, both of Oswego, Angie (Chris) Worlow, Sherry (Doug) Folkert, and Crystal Whited, all of North Pekin, Dorrena (Frank) Hendrickson of Indiana, Georgette (Dale) Huser of Peoria, and Robyn (John) Prentice of Pekin; twenty-five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four brothers, Theodore (Becky) Appleyard of North Pekin, James (Lucy) Roberts of Oregon, Alexander (Shirley) Roberts of Creve Coeur, and George (Pat) Roberts of Pekin;one sister, Frances (Kenneth) Perkins of Chillicothe; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter (Theresa Appleyard on January 11, 1979), four brothers (Emil Appleyard, Harold Appleyard, Harvey Roberts, and Robert Roberts), and two sisters (Josephine Gilroy and Maxine Pennington).

A United States Marine Corp veteran of the Korean War, he served from March 14, 1952 to March 13, 1955. He attained the rank of Corporal.

Richard worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years as a machinist, retiring in 1982 from parts identification at the Morton plant.

He was a life member of the Paul Towne Memorial AMVETS Post #169 in North Pekin, where he served as Commander from 1980 to 1981.

Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, country music, and working on things in his garage.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Pastor Frank Hendrickson, his son-in-law, will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded.
