Born on November 3, 1962, in Springfield, Illinois, to George and Betty Powell, Tom built a life defined by hard work, family, and a love for the outdoors.
Tom spent more than 30 years working as a machinist and programmer. He took pride in his work, enjoyed solving problems, and was respected by those who knew and worked alongside him.
An avid outdoorsman, Tom was happiest in the woods. Whether hunting whitetails in the fall, chasing turkeys in the spring, or sharing his knowledge as a licensed hunting guide, he enjoyed passing along his love of the outdoors to others. He was also a dedicated NASCAR fan whose loyalty to Kyle Larson never wavered, and he enjoyed cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals whenever they took the field.
Those who knew Tom knew there was a good chance of finding him in the pole barn with a wrench in one hand and a Busch Light in the other. He could fix nearly anything and was always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help. More importantly, he never hesitated to show up.
Tom’s greatest pride was his family. He and Jennifer shared 39 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his daughters, Krista (Dalton) Hoehn, Kayla (Aaron) Powell, Monica Powell, Debbie (Kenneth) Stayton, and Barbie Farrow-Wise; his brothers, Gerald Powell, Cole (Tammy) Powell, and Geoffrey Powell; 17 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with them.
To many, Tom was more than a friend. He was a father figure, a mentor, and someone whose advice and example left a lasting impact. His influence extended far beyond his family, and his memory will continue to live on in the lives of those he touched.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, George and Betty Powell; his sister-in-law, Cynthia Powell; and his niece, Nancy Powell.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Tom’s visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday June 27, 2026, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Cremation has been accorded.
Family and friends are invited to gather afterward at VFW Post 1232 in Pekin for food, drinks, and fellowship as they celebrate Tom’s life and share memories together. Those attending the gathering are encouraged to wear their favorite camo in honor of Tom.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Powell family in Tom’s memory.
