

Born January 15, 1918 in Streeter, North Dakota to Alfred and Bertha (Dinsmore) Long, she married Herman Maseman on December 6, 1941 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on January 11, 1988 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Margaret May; one brother; two sisters; two step-brothers; and three step-sisters.
Surviving are one daughter, Hermene (Ron) Upchurch of Pekin; three grandchildren, Darren Upchurch and Noelle (Matthew) Weghorst, both of Pekin, and Heather Upchurch of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Garrett Weghorst and Avery Weghorst, both of Pekin; and one sister, Mabel Heinemann of Rapid City, South Dakota.
Velda had worked in the Drapery Department at Reuling’s Department Store in downtown Pekin for 17 years, retiring in 1971.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin and the Concordia Society of the church.
Velda enjoyed ceramics, quilting, and gardening. She cherished her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her beautiful quilts.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin. The Rev. Dr. Rodger P. Abatie will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
