Virginia was born on December 8, 1929 in West Frankfort, Illinois, to Gordon and Virginia Christoff. On February 19, 1949, she married the love of her life, John W. Trobaugh. He preceded her in death on August 20, 2018, after many cherished years together.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Bill Christoff and Charles Christoff; and her beloved daughter, Kathy Lynn McKelvey.
Virginia is survived by her son, Rick Trobaugh of Godfrey; her son-in-law, Randy McKelvey of Belleville; six grandchildren, Heather Allen, Kristen (Josh) Black, Brent (Kari) Trobaugh, Chad (Yolanda) Trobaugh, Corey Trobaugh, and Andrew (Rachel) Trobaugh; twelve great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Before her marriage, Virginia worked in a glove factory in Carbondale. She went on to spend 30 years in the accounting department at Sears before retiring.
A woman of deep and steady faith, Virginia was a devoted member of Woodland Baptist Church in Peoria for more than 60 years. She lovingly taught second grade Sunday School for 62 years and gave her time generously to the church’s senior luncheons, where she delighted in decorating, leading the singing of old hymns, and organizing games. She sang in the choir for many years and was always among the first to volunteer to prepare meals for those who were ill or grieving the loss of a loved one.
Virginia was a member of the Red Hat Society and often welcomed meetings into her home. She enjoyed shopping, losing herself in a good book, and spending quiet time in her backyard. After retirement, she volunteered in local grade schools, helping children who struggled with reading. Above all, Virginia adored children and treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren and family.
Her funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2026 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, with Mark Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin.
