Born January 25, 1939 in Pekin to Edward John and Beulah (Watkins) Hilst, he married Carol Sue Lawson on September 25, 1965 at Faith Baptist Church in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife Carol; three children, Stacy (Rod) Wise of Arlington, Texas, Tara (Jason) Kassis of East Peoria, IL and Derek (Nicole) Hilst of Charlotte, North Carolina; and nine grandchildren, Spencer, Tori, and Cameron Wise, Miles, Sierra, and Autumn Kassis, and Cash, Cruz and Malachi Hilst.
His parents preceded him in death.
A veteran of the United States Army, Bill served from July 30, 1958 to July 29, 1961.
Bill worked at Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville for 40 years, retiring in 2001 as a galvanizer. He was affectionately nicknamed "Teddy Bear” by many co-workers.
Bill was an avid bowler and bowling instructor and enjoyed fishing in his younger years. Later he focused on softball and basketball as a coach, scorekeeper and athletic director. He was on staff at his church for many years. A lifelong Cubs fan, he enjoyed watching them win the World Series.Bill had a very generous spirit, a kind heart, and a dry wit.
After a short hospital stay, Bill passed away from pancreatitis complicated by gallstones, compounded by pneumonia and other issues that proved too much for his recovery. Where he left his mark on this world in a profound way, Bill is now in his Heavenly home having made the decision to trust Christ as his savior. During his life he believed in and led others to Christ and, as the end grew near, said he was ready to go to Heaven.
His funeral will be at 6 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Steve Barch will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Private burial will be Tuesday at Prarie Haven Cemetery in Pekin.
