Tony was born in Columbus, Mississippi on February 7, 1947, to the late Armour Lenoir Coggins and Catherine Moore Coggins. He grew up in the Birmingham area and graduated from Minor High School. After high school, he attended and graduated from Jacksonville State University where he was a four-year letterman of the Jacksonville State baseball team and was awarded MVP in 1969. He spent six years in the National Guard and was the founder and CEO of Budget Movers for 35 years. Tony was also a member of Metropolitan Church of God.
On April 20, 1984, he married Tammy Newell at Central Park Baptist Church. Their union would be blessed with two sons and a daughter.
Tony was known for his outgoing and carefree demeanor. He was an athlete all of his life, and besides playing baseball, he was also a tennis club pro. Tony was a huge fan of Alabama football, the Atlanta Braves, and the Briarwood Lions.
Preceding Tony in death are his parents; his daughter, Jessica Lani Coggins; and his sister, Sherri Coggins Morrow.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 38 years, Tammy Newell Coggins; his two sons, Lance Coggins and his wife, Beth; and Blake Coggins; two granddaughters, Missy Grace Coggins and Madisyn Caroline Coggins; his sister, Victoria Dufrense; and his brother, Phil Coggins. He is also survived by niece and nephews, Kerney “Trey” Smith; Tory Morrow; and Tiffany Morrow; along with many dear friends.
A Celebration of Tony’s Life will be held at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Friday, December 30, 2022, at 2:00 pm with a visitation beginning at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
