Betsy Cowan

COWAN, BETSY MARJORIE DYCHES, 74, of Birmingham, AL died Monday, February 7, 2022. Originally from Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Claude O. Dyches, Sr. and the late Elise Wooten Dyches both of SC. She was the middle child of three siblings. She was preceded in death by her younger brother Claude O. Dyches, Jr. and survived by her sister Claudia Dyches Brantley.

Betsy was preceded in death by her cherished husband of 47 years, Charles E. Cowan. Those left to love and cherish Betsy’s memories are her loving daughters Deborah Karen Cowan and Cynthia Cowan Bailey and four adored grandchildren, Amanda Elise Metcalfe, Casey Michelle Bailey, Matthew Dale Metcalfe, and Charles Garrett Bailey. She was a faithful servant of God and a longtime member of North Shelby Baptist Church, Birmingham.

A truly beloved woman, Betsy was devoted to her family, friends, and flowers. She loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren, a proud grandmother reveling in their accomplishments. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends whom she adored and treasured. You could often find Betsy in her kitchen cooking delicious meals for those she loved. When Betsy was spending quality time by herself, you would find her in her award-winning yard planting and pruning the flowers she loved so dearly.

The family will be receiving friends and loved ones for visitation at North Shelby Baptist Church, Birmingham on Monday, February 14, 2022, at 10 a.m. with a service to follow at 11 a.m.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association.
