On January 11, Betty Platt Sullins of Hoover, AL passed away at the age of 84 surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born on February 11, 1934 in Henderson, Texas. She earned a teaching degree from East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, Texas and taught elementary school for 35 years. She taught at Shades Cahaba Elementary School in Homewood, AL, and often reminisced about her love of teaching fifth grade. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Betty had a passion for gardening, ceramics and antiques. In retirement, she joined the choir at Hunter Street Baptist Church. As president of Polo Trace Homeowners Association, she enjoyed hosting coffee socials for her community. She was independent and strong, a pancreatic cancer survivor. A life-long teacher, she enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters and sharing her stories, wisdom and love of crafts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Everett and Fanny Q. Platt of East Texas; a sister, Sue Green of Texas; husband, Jerome Sullins of Alabama. She is survived by her daughter, Pam (Steve) Hudgens of Springfield, VA; son, David Sumrall of Birmingham, AL; niece, Debbie Green; nephews, Larry (Sharon) Green and Randy (Cathy) Green all of Gilmer, Texas; granddaughters, Michelle Hudgens (Jake) Lehmann of Alexandria, VA; Laura (Ben) Kaminski of Fairfax, VA; Rachel Hudgens of Lorton, VA. In lieu of flowers, Betty requested that donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org) or the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation (dtrf.org).
A visitation will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home (475 Cahaba Valley Rd, Pelham, AL 35124) on Saturday, January 19 at 11:00 am followed by a graveside service. Reception to follow.
