Bill Fleming Towers, Jr., age 84, former Chief of Vestavia Hills (Alabama) Fire Department, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013. He was born on May 26, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama to Bill Sr. and Mattie B. Towers.
A U.S. Air Force Veteran, Bill was employed with Hayes Aircraft before serving 37 years at Vestavia Hills Fire Department, retiring with 28 years as Fire Chief. He was also actively involved in the community as a 60-year Mason, York Rite Mason, Scotish Rite Mason, and as a long-time member of the Zamora Shrine Temple Greeters Unit.
Bill loved to attend reunions of "The Avondale Boys," his closest friends from his former neighborbood in Birmingham, and he cherished his family's vacations at their Seaside, Florida condo.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife Charlene Betty Wynne Towers and daughter Sandy Towers Pennington. Survivors include daughter, Debbie Towers Rice and husband Rick; son-in-law, Rick Pennington; and four grandchildren, Jeff Rice, Chris Pennington, Heather Hines and husband Dudley, and Chelsea Pennington.
The family will greet friends from 12 noon until the 2 p.m. service on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 in the chapel of Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Pastor Danny Wood of Shades Mountain Baptist, Bill's long-time home church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham with the Vestavia Hills Fire Department Honor Guard serving as active pallbearers. Members of The Avondale Boys and Zamora Shrine Greeters Unit will serve as honorary pallbearers.
