Carole Copeland Brooks of Sterrett, AL, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014. Carole was a breast cancer survivor. From the moment she was diagnosed, she never complained or felt sorry for herself - she just wanted to beat it. She believed she could. She did well for quite a while, until suddenly, she began having some strange problems. Her cancer had returned. This time, though, it was hiding in her liver, undetected despite regular doctors visits. Seventeen days after this second diagnosis, she died at age 52. Carole was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Brooks, and her parents, Judson and Elizabeth Copeland. She is survived by her sister, Lisa Copeland, and a host of family and friends. Carole graduated with honors from Bessemer State Technical College. She was most recently employed by Spring Aire Cleaners in Cahaba Heights, AL, where she worked until her illness forced her to quit. She also worked for many years as the kennel manager at Dr. Pet at the Riverchase Galleria. Carole was devoted to her family and had many hobbies and interests. She learned to cook from her grandmother, and she could make anything taste delicious. Nothing, however, rivaled her love for animals. She instantly adored every animal she met, especially dogs. She enjoyed nothing more than playing with them and spoiling them rotten. Carole faced her battle with grace and dignity. Her only worry was what would become of her dog should something happen to her. In that light, in lieu of memorials, please consider making a donation to a no-kill shelter of your choosing, or to any charity that cares for animals. The family will receive friends one hour before the 1 p.m. funeral on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL. Burial, Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. Dr. Bill Friday will officiate.
