
Charles Eugene ("Gene") Caldwell, an attorney and long-time resident of Hoover, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2021 at the age of 73. Gene is survived by his wife Leigh McCarty Caldwell; his sons, Eric Caldwell (Wife Ashley), of Hoover, AL, Brandon Caldwell, of Panama City, FL and Todd LaPore (Wife Chantelle) of Helena, AL; His grandchildren, Charlie, Jack Henry, and Stella Caldwell, and Brayden, Jarrett, and Liam LaPore; and his brother Jerry Daniel Caldwell, of Eastaboga, AL. He is preceded in death by his brothers, James Edward Caldwell, and William Jackson Caldwell. Gene was born on February 28, 1947 in Clay County, Alabama, to parents Charles Everett Caldwell and Alma Lucille Caldwell. Gene attended Lincoln High School and received his B.S. degree from Lipscomb University in Nashville. After college, he moved to Birmingham where he graduated with a Law degree from the Birmingham School of Law. He clerked for Judge Cecil M. Deason and became a member of the Alabama Bar Association in 1977. Gene was dedicated to his clients and highly regarded in the Birmingham legal community. He maintained a successful law practice until his death. Gene was involved in athletics from a young age and excelled in basketball. He was initially recruited by Auburn and ultimately played on a championship team at Young Harris College. He was a fixture at the downtown Birmingham YMCA for many years and enjoyed staying active. Before work each morning, Gene was often found at Demetri's in Homewood with the "Breakfast Bunch," a group of friends that he enjoyed sharing laughs with. He will always be remembered by family and friends for his infectious and witty personality and love of joke telling.
