Charles Lawrence Smith, lovingly known as Larry, age 79 of Sylvan Springs, Alabama, passed away October 12, 2026. Larry was born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 6, 1947. Larry lived a life defined by hard work, love and dedication to his family and all those close to him. His faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was his cornerstone
Larry shared nearly 50 years of marriage with Sheila. A marriage filled with love, joy, and commitment to each other and the family that was a blessing from God.
Larry retired from BellSouth in 2001 and began his second career as a home builder. With strong work ethic, Larry built things meant to last. This is how he left his mark on countless lives. The greatest part of his legacy was not just what he built, but the love he poured into everything he did as well as the lives he touched along the way.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. It reflected his love of country and his sense of duty. He carried these qualities throughout his life.
Larry was a member of Church of the Highlands. He served faithfully on the Usher Team and later on the Safety Team. Larry loved serving the Motion conferences each year. He was excited and moved to see the impact this conference made in the lives of the younger generation.
Larry’s greatest joy was his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother, and without a doubt, a proud Pops to his grandchildren. His seven grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and being their Pops was one of life‘s most precious gifts to him. Each of them brought him so much joy. The love they share will remain a treasured part of their lives forever.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila; his children Jason Smith (Bree Smith); Lori Youngblood, Erin Smith (Ron Smith); and his seven grandchildren, Rhealyn Youngblood, Triton Smith, Sam Smith, Asher Youngblood, Sawyer Smith, Rosie Youngblood and Tate Smith. He is also survived by his brother David Smith and his sister, Vanice Jones (Rickey Jones). Along with other extended family and many dear friends who will miss him dearly.
Larry lived a life with too many accomplishments to mention. He leaves a family shaped by his love, a church family touched by faithful service, and countless memories that will be held dear forever.
Larry loved his life, and his life was a blessing to all who knew him.
