Raised in rural southern Illinois, David enjoyed hunting, fishing, and athletics. He lettered in basketball at Vienna High School and often reminded family and friends that, despite his small frame, he was an accurate shooter.
After high school graduation, David served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant while manning radar stations in Greenland. During his service, he studied engineering science and mathematics and was recognized for his strong academic performance.
Following his honorable discharge, David began a long career as a software developer with Krack Corporation in Addison, Illinois, where he worked for 40 years. In 2000, he moved to the Birmingham, Alabama area to be closer to his grandchildren.
David was a Christian who loved studying Scripture and read the Bible cover to cover several times. He also enjoyed documenting the family genealogy. Though he spent many years in the Chicago area, he remained a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was also a passionate supporter of University of Illinois basketball. Above all, he treasured time with family and rarely missed a baseball or softball game in which his grandchildren played.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Esther Aliene and William Laverne Boyd; his sister, Mary Brooks (Harvey); and his brother, Richard Boyd (Aletha). He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna Maye Boyd; his son, Stevan Boyd (Mary); three grandchildren, Meaghan Kaminsky, Ashlyn Reeves (Reagan), and Brandon Boyd; and one great-granddaughter, Maelynn Reeves. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. A gravesite committal service with military honors will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
The family finds comfort in knowing that David’s legacy lives on through the love he shared, the lessons he taught, and the memories that will be cherished forever.
