He was born in Bellville, New Jersey September 4, 1934 to Joseph Engel and Beatrice Russo Engel. He graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, S.C. in 1953. He graduated from Florida State University in 1963 with a B.S. degree in insurance. He served 2 years in the US Army beginning June, 1959. He began “Dave Engel Insurance Agency” in 1988 which continued until 2024. He loved playing golf, and breeding, training, and showing horses.
He and his wife, Joanne, celebrated 62 years of marriage in June of 2026. They were members of Shades Mountain Community Church together for 53 years. He was one of the original Elders. He also served as deacon and Sunday School teacher of 2nd grade boys. In recent years, he loved serving in the prayer ministry. His parents were home missionaries sent out to plant churches throughout Florida in the 1940’s. This fostered his passion to help a variety of ministries any way he could. When David and Joanne acquired a property in 1980 for the start of a Christian School for children with special needs, they dedicated it to be used for ministry always. It was used to assist Iglesia La Fe in a soccer outreach program and continues today to be used in the soccer program at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. David loved knowing that their property would facilitate the spread of the gospel, especially to boys and girls.
David was preceded in death by his son, David Scott Engel, his mother, Beatrice Russo Engel, his father, Joseph Engel, His brother, Richard L. Engel, and his sister, Evelyn Engel Wilson.
