

MILLER, DELMER STONE, age 87, of Bessemer, Alabama passed away Monday morning, June 25, 2012. The Cleveland, Alabama native was born May 27, 1925 to Jessie Carl Miller and Nannie Mae Nance Miller, and grew up in the Montevallo, Alabama area. He received several military commendations during his 21 years in the U.S. Navy, serving in nine major battles in the Pacific Theatre during WWII before fighting in the Korean War. He was one of the first U.S. observers after the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. Later, he worked for military contractors in Vietnam and Iran. Upon his return to Alabama, Delmer worked several years at Alabama Power and retired from facility maintenance at the company headquarters in Birmingham. He was an active member of Shades Valley Lodge 829, Zamora Shrine, The American Legion Post AL 0149, and the Fleet Reserve Association. In addition to his parents, Delmer was preceded in death by his son, John Richard Miller; daughter, Connie Dee Miller Hutson; and step-daughter, Linda Gail Miles. Survivors include Delmer's loving wife of 31 years, Annie Pearl Gilbert Miller; step-son, Jerry Wayne Barron (Linda); grandchildren, Carla De Lane Hutson Silver (Charles), Cortnee Hutson Blaser (Bob), and John Gabriel Miller; great-grandchildren; brother, Herby Miller (Louise); nieces; nephews; and a host of friends. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Delmer's home church, Pleasant Hill United Methodist in McCalla. The funeral service will be at the church at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, and burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Hoover. Pastor Alan Head will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church's Building Fund or Zamora Temple Transportation Fund.
