

Diane Moats Hogan, 74, passed away Monday, October 16, 2017 surrounded by family. Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, Mrs. Hogan was a proud graduate of the University of Alabama and a member of Delta Zeta sorority. In 1963 she was crowned Top Corolla beauty at the University. She was also crowned Alabama's Maid of Cotton, Camellia Queen, and 3rd runner-up in the Miss Alabama Pageant. Following the birth of her three children, Diane worked for 22 years as a home economist for Southern Living Magazine in the test kitchens and editorial department. She was affectionately known as "the cake lady", as many of the cakes she baked graced the cover of the magazine and numerous cookbooks. But of all her titles, the one she held most dear was that of "MeMomma" to her eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Chelsea, Alabama. Mrs. Hogan was preceded in death by her parents, Julian E. Moats and Estelle S. Moats, Birmingham. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James R. Hogan, Sr.; three children, Dana H. Byers (Mark), James R. Hogan, Jr. (Amy), and Caryn H. Longshore (Trey), all of Birmingham; brother, Michael L. Moats (Lisa); and grandchildren, Sarah B. Wood (John), Mark D. Byers, Jr. (Brook), Kathryn B. Thomas (Jackson), Anna G. Byers, Jacob H. Byers, Matthew B. Hogan, Joshua A. Hogan, Eleanor F. Hogan, William J. Nabors (Rebecca), Eliza D. Nabors, Emily M. Nabors, and great-grandchildren, John Caleb, Charlotte, William, Henry, and Ivy. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Service to follow at 2 p.m. with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
