Don was born on October 5, 1931, to Harold Everett and Elsie Miriam Boomershine in Brookville, Ohio. After graduation from Brookville High School, he went to Bowling Green (Ohio) State University and received a Bachelor of Science degree. Afterwards, Don went on to attend Northwestern University Bank Marketing Graduate School and Rutgers University Stonier School of Banking.
Colonel Boomershine’s extensive experience at the executive level spanned more than 52 years before retiring in 2007. Highly regarded for his professionalism, breadth of knowledge and insight, he concluded his career as the President of the Better Business Bureau Central Alabama. Don earned many titles throughout the years, however his most cherished was, and will forever be, Papa.
Don is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patricia (Patti) Boomershine, his children Jeff Boomershine (Rebecca), Andy Raine (Shannon), his grandchildren Matthew Boomershine (Rachael), Mary Katherine Boomershine, Caroline Raine, Andrew Raine, and the newest Boomershine, his great-granddaughter Addeline and his brother Jim Boomershine.
In 1971, Don joined the Kiwanis club of Birmingham. He also served as Vice President of National Veterans Day in Birmingham and the Marine Corp League. Colonel Boomershine completed 50 years with the American Red Cross as a leader and volunteer. He developed many business and personal friends in various organizations over the years. Don was grateful for everything and everyone.
Throughout most of Don’s life he played basketball and built friendships around the game. “The Varsity” continued to enjoy their “spirited” games for 30 years. In 1958, he joined the “Y” and continued playing handball until COVID19 closed everything in March 2020; he was 88 years old. He and his partners won many senior championships.
Don was a spirited soul and one of many passions, but his greatest passion was his love of family. He spent many days with his wife Patti traveling the beaches of Hawaii and many other places. Later, Don and Patti started a tradition of family vacations. Our time together has always been loud and proud; time and memories that will be forever cherished by his family.
Don was predeceased by Marilyn Sullivan Boomershine. They were married for 31 years until her death in 1984.
Colonel Boomershine’s services will be held at Canterbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham on Friday, April 21st. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 followed by the service from 10:30 – 11:30. The burial will be at Alabama National Cemetery, located in Montevallo, Alabama.
