Donna married Phillip Lawrence Garrett on June 18th, 1982. However, they had been together since 1977. Donna and Phillip welcomed their first and only child Lawrence “Clint” Garrett in October of 1991 and he became their pride and joy.
Donna was an amazing woman. She was a very giving woman and truly loved with all of her heart. She was a graduate of Thompson High School in 1979 where she immediately took a position with Blue Cross and Blue Shield. She loved her Blue Cross and Blue Shield family where her career of 37 years lead her to retirement in 2016.
Donna had a beautiful smile and loved to laugh. There are many memories of her playing games and conversing with her loved ones. Through the past 5 years Donna was plagued by Small Cell Lung Cancer. She was still able to travel and see new places. She always loved to go for a simple day trip to explore an antique shop or a week long trip away with her family and loved ones. She always found comfort in the sounds of crashing waves or simply listening to the humming birds from her country home. Donna was a resident of Shelby County her entire life. From her childhood home in Keystone, what today is known as Pelham, to her families farm in Calera she truly loved this community.
Preceding Donna in death are her brothers, Larry Joe Carter, Michael Wayne Carter, Paul Douglas Carter, Rex Allen Carter; her sister-in-law, Wanda Garrett Lawley; her niece, Tanya Renee Carter, and nephew, Kenneth Wayne Carter.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband Phillip L. Garrett of Calera, AL; her cherished son Lawrence “Clint” Garrett of Wetumpka, AL; her aunts and uncles Jean Gurley (Dennis) of Warrior, AL; Barbara C. Backes of Colorado; Wanda Holcomb (Doug) of Jemison, AL; Jerry Crowson of Oregon; and Linda McKinney (Jim) of Calera, AL. Her sister-in-law Debra Lovelady (Kim) of Montevallo, AL. Her nieces and nephews Lee Lawley (Jodie) of Alabaster, AL; Lesley Fondren of Thorsby, AL; Chip Lovelady (Jacren) of Jemison, AL; Amanda Carter of Springfield, MO and Nicholas Carter. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews along with many cousins.
Visitation will be held at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Saturday, December 30th, 2023, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 pm. She will be laid to rest immediately following at Elliotsville Cemetery in Alabaster.
