Dorothy Jean Munkus passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved her. She was born on December 12, 1949, to Jadie Wesley Holsomback and Dorothy Hyde Holsomback and attended school in Helena, Alabama.
Dorothy married Richard Munkus on December 6, 1972. They shared 60 years together. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Dorothy loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, traveling when she had the opportunity, and visiting her daughter and family in Orlando. She also enjoyed caring for her animals and was always there to help and care for her extended family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Jadie and Dorothy Holsomback; and her brothers, Jadie Wesley Holsomback Jr. and Willie Ray Holsomback.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Munkus; daughters, Alice Marie Wages (Larry) of Orlando and Wendy Ann Smitherman of Birmingham; grandchildren, Richard Smitherman (Marisa) of Pueblo, Colorado, Judith Wages of Oregon, and Melinda Smitherman of Birmingham; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish her memory.
Visitation will be held at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home and Cemetery, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124, US, on September 29, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at the same location from 1:45 pm to 2:30 pm.
A Committal Service will take place on September 29, 2026, at Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery, 475 Cahaba Valley Rd, Pelham, AL 35124, US, from 2:30 pm to 2:45 pm.
