Born on May 21, 1940, in Boston, Massachusetts, Ed was the son of William F. and Mary C. (Bernard) Hughes. He was raised in Boston, where he attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic High School in Roxbury, graduating in 1958.
From an early age, Ed embraced life with energy and enthusiasm. He loved sports of every kind and was known to find creative ways to slip into a Red Sox, Celtics, or Bruins game whenever the opportunity arose. While working in his father’s neighborhood drug store as a young man, Ed developed the strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that would guide him throughout his life. Gifted with compassion and a natural desire to help others, Ed chose to pursue a career in pharmacy. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1965 and went on to serve as a pharmacist in the United States Army, followed by a distinguished and lengthy career in the United States Air Force.
On June 26, 1965, Ed married the love of his life, Carol A. (Davis) Hughes, in Arlington, Massachusetts. The two met by chance at a gathering in Boston—Ed a pharmacy student, Carol a nursing student—and were inseparable from that day forward. Together, they built a life centered on love, faith, and family, raising their son, Robert E. Hughes, and daughter, Cynthia A. Florence.
Following retirement, Ed and Carol relocated to Birmingham, Alabama in 1997 to be close to their children and, later, their cherished grandchildren. Family was the heart of Ed’s world. He found joy in the simple but meaningful moments: tossing a ball in the backyard, pitching batting practice, grooming horses, and planning trips back to New England to revisit favorite ice cream stands and seafood restaurants. His steady presence, generous spirit, and gentle kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Mary C. (Bernard) Hughes; his brother, Patrick A. Hughes; and many beloved relatives.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Carol A. (Davis) Hughes; his son, Robert E. Hughes (Laura B. Hughes); his daughter, Cynthia A. Florence (Jeffrey D. Florence); and his three treasured grandchildren, George E. Hughes, Charles D. Hughes, and Catherine A. Florence, along with his beloved granddog, Breckin. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, William F. Hughes (Kathleen Hughes), and leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will deeply mourn his passing.
Ed wished to be cremated, with his remains interred at Alabama National Cemetery. A private ceremony will be held at a future time.
As a devout Catholic, Ed’s life was defined by faith and devotion—to his family, his country, and his community. His legacy of love, generosity, and quiet strength will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
