Elbert Jackson “Bucky” Buckelew Jr., age 81, of Alpine, Alabama, passed away on June 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by Mary Miller Buckelew, his wife and best friend of 63 years.
Bucky was a graduate of Ensley High School and Samford University School of Pharmacy. After running a successful drug store for many years — and never being one to shy away from a new opportunity — he owned a chain of video stores and built and operated two golf courses in Jefferson and Shelby counties. Those who knew Bucky will remember his work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, infectious sense of humor, and genuine kindness.
An avid outdoorsman, Bucky loved hunting and treasured every season spent in the woods, leaving behind countless stories that would have you in utter amazement or laughing uncontrollably. He shared that love with those closest to him; weekends at the hunting camp — especially with the grandchildren — were the most special of all, creating memories that will be passed down through generations.
Bucky’s greatest passion was his family. He faithfully attended his grandchildren’s softball games, football games, and fishing tournaments, always wearing their team colors. He drove them to practices and tournaments, served as boat captain, sent encouraging texts, and gave his time freely — doing whatever he could to show unwavering love and support.
A man of steadfast faith, Bucky was a devoted Southern Baptist who trusted in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. That faith was the foundation beneath everything else — the generosity, the quiet help, and the unwavering love for his family all flowed from it. He now rests in the presence of the Savior he faithfully served.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Jackson Buckelew Sr. and Minnie M. Buckelew, and his brother, Jerry Mack Buckelew. He is survived by his children, Meredith Coyne (Bryan) and Allison Howard (Johnny); and his grandchildren, Bailey Coyne, Riley Coyne, Trent Howard (Carson), and Tucker Howard.
Known lovingly as Elbert, Daddy, and Bucky, he will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the people he quietly helped, and the stories he leaves behind.
A private graveside service will be held. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Donations may be made at:
