Fares F. George, passed away peacefully at home with family on August 22, 2020. Fares was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1942 and moved to Montgomery, AL shortly after marrying the love of his life, Mona George. To know Fares was to love him and be loved by him. He was the most loving, funny, generous, hard-working, kind person. He loved God, his family, and life. He welcomed all those he met and would give even a stranger the shirt off his back. He is survived by his wife Mona, who he was married to for 41 years. They deeply loved and cared for each other until the end. He is also survived by his two daughters, Marie (George) Joseph and Nancy (George) Melton. He lived each and everyday to provide a wonderful life for them and Mona. To say they were “daddy’s girls” would be an understatement. Anyone who saw this family could see and feel the love and respect they had for their father. Fares was strong and stubborn, even as his health started to decline, he continued to fight to be there to see his daughters get married and see his grandchildren. Nancy married Wade Melton and they had twins George and Sophia (5). Marie married John Joseph, Jr. and they have two girls Mary Fares (4) and Madeleine (3). Fares always wanted sons of his own and gained two in Wade and John who he loved and trusted with the most important things in his life. He certainly didn’t mind giving them a hard time and his best glass of scotch was the one he shared with John and Wade. Fares loved being a Gido (grandfather in Arabic) and it truly gave him a reason to push on. The kids loved being with there with him and looked forward to his many surprises but were also on their best behavior around him because they did not want Gido to yell at them. Fares had large family that loved him. Madeleine El-Masri, Marie Mahrous, and Magdi Mahrous (Mona’s siblings). He is also survived by his family in Egypt: sister Fayza George, her daughter Yvette Toni, nephews: Magued Fakhry, Sameh Fakhry, George Fathy, Nieces: Irini Fathy, Mona Fathy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fouad and Victoria, siblings Fathy, Fakhry, Victor, and Fayka, Fares is also survived by many friends who he considered family - his friends from his 30+ years at Regions bank and the many families from all over the world that he and Mona sponsored during their time as International Ambassadors for the Air War College in Montgomery.
The service will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home (475 Cahaba Valley Rd, Pelham, AL 35124) with visitation from 11:00am -1:00pm and prayer service at 1:00pm. Fares was such a generous person, we ask in lieu of flowers please make a donation to Catholic Charities or a charity close to your heart.
