

Florence Ethel McLane Coleman, 88, of Birmingham, AL, passed away peacefully February 4, 2017. She was born June 17, 1928 to the late Walter Edwin McLane and Coren Elizabeth Gurley McLane in Birmingham.
Florence was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Jimmy Wood Coleman, and a beloved granddaughter, Mary Bethany Coleman Mapp.
Survivors include Florence's sons, Jimmy Wood Coleman Jr. and his wife Betty Ann Coleman, Harry Edwin Coleman and his wife Regina Coleman, and Walter McLane Coleman and his wife Rose Coleman; and six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Adriann Lane Coleman of Pelham, AL, Jimmy (Trae) Wood Coleman III of Houston, TX, Sherri Coleman Ausbun (Daniel) and their children Daniel, Jr., Elizabeth, Benjamin, and Esther of Lexington, KY, Holly Coleman Cossiboom (Chad) and their children Abby, Noah, Jude, and Micah of Birmingham, Marci Coleman Hare (Rob) and their children Joel, Jonah, and Lia-Joan of Newark, OH, Rashelle Coleman Morrow (Bradley) and their children Kylie and Bradley Jr. of San Diego, CA. Florence also leaves behind her constant, loving canine companion Toby.
Florence attended Howard University (Samford), where she studied Architectural Design and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She retired as a School Bank Administrator from SouthTrust Bank. She was a member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Circle 3, Hilltoppers, and a mentor for young people confirmation discipleship class. She also was a member of Builders for Christ Mission Team and Telephone Pioneers of America Alabama Chapter Number 34.
As a tireless volunteer, Florence regularly manned the Lighthouse welcome center at church, procured and arranged floral tributes for Sunday worship and special events, and assisted in serving Wednesday night dinners. Her enthusiasm for football was widely known, as she was an avid Auburn football fan.
In addition, Florence's legacy is scattered throughout Alabama and points beyond with her insatiable desire to create and supply her handmade needlepoint projects to her church, community, friends, and family.
The family expresses a special, heartfelt thanks to the staff of Brookwood Hospital, Comfort Care Hospice, and Aspire at Cahaba River for their loving, competent care.
Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church (Vestavia Hills, AL), immediately followed by the 2 p.m. celebration of life service officiated by Reverend Jim Frazier. The graveside service will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery (Pelham, AL).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
