

LONG, FREDERICK "REID," passed away on Friday morning, September 23, 2011. He was 78 years old. Reid was a native of Panola, Alabama and had lived in Alabaster, Alabama for the past 43 years. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, class of 1962. Reid moved to Alabaster in 1968 and started with B&S Insurance and Realty, which came to be Scott-Long Insurance and Realty. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Alabaster, and was the last surviving charter member of the Alabaster Rotary Club. Reid was awarded the honor of being a Paul Harris Fellow. Throughout his career, he proudly served on the boards at Shelby Memorial Hospital, Citizens Bank, Cahaba Title Company, The Alabaster Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Chairman of the Board of The First United Methodist Church of Alabaster. Reid also served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. Reid was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Long and Ida Ivy Grove Long, and his sister, Mary Lula Long Williamson. Survivors include Reid's loving wife of 49 years, Martha Cork "Corky" Long; one son, Rick and his wife MaryAlayne, and their children Jake and Sadie Sue; one daughter, Laurie Ivy Long Bull and her husband Leo, and their daughter Anna Reid; loving sister, Ida Hibler Long Colgrove; brother, Ed Long; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at The First United Methodist Church of Alabaster, with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. A private family burial will be at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. Pallbearers will include Harold Berryhill, Richard Brasher, Joel Colgrove, Reid Colgrove, Mark Gamble, Bill "Brother" Oliver, and Alan Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Carr, Phil Gamble, Lou Oliver, and Jay Palmer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to First United Methodist Church of Alabaster,10903 Highway 119, Alabaster, AL 35007.
