On August 18, 2023, George Wesley Sorrell, Jr., age 78, of Birmingham, passed away in the loving arms of his wife, Deborah. Their marriage of 32 years was one of love, laughter, and just being together.
Wes was a graduate of Ensley High School and the University of Alabama and went on to serve in the United States Air Force as a Ground Radio Operator from 1968-72. He always enjoyed learning and decided to earn his real estate license after retiring from his 30-year tenure as Comptroller for Butler Manufacturing. Wes was an avid reader, tennis player and devoted fan of the Crimson Tide. Most of all, he loved being a grandfather.
Those that knew Wes appreciated his gentle personality and sweet smile. A member of The Church at Brook Hills, he was a humble man with a strong faith and never said an unkind word about anyone.
Wes is survived by his wife, Deborah, and sister, Sally Kaiser (Dennis), and his stepchildren, Myra Doris Ford, and Emmette Wallace Ford III (Whitney). "Grandpa" will be dearly missed by John Vincent, Caroline, Brooks, Charlie, and Emmette. He is preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and George W. Sorrell, his grandparents, Arlene and Oscar L. Sorrell and Susie and Edward B. Wildsmith, and his stepson John Daniel Ford.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with the service to follow at 11:00 am. Wes will be laid to rest with full military honors at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be sent to Shriners Children's Greenville, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605.
