

After graduating from South Pittsburg High School, South Pittsburg, TN, Mrs. Clifton attended Shorter College in Rome, GA. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Speech from Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa and Alpha Psi Omega.
Mrs. Clifton was also a member of Georgetown College’s Maskcrafters touring company, with which she toured England, France and Belgium presenting original plays. She and the company performed at the Brussels World’s Fair.
Mrs. Clifton subsequently received the first Master’s Degree in Fine Arts awarded by the University of Montevallo, AL.
A teacher of more than 40 years, Mrs. Clifton taught at Henry Clay High School, Lexington KY; East High School, Nashville, TN; Bethel College, McKenzie, TN; and in Alabama at Tuscaloosa High School, Plantersville Middle School, Inglenook Academy and St. Aloysius School. She finished her teaching career in Birmingham, AL, at St. Francis Xavier School, where she taught for over 20 years and prepared many young people for the Sacrament of Confirmation. She was a five-time winner of Who’s Who Among American Teachers.
Mrs. Clifton was an accomplished musician, playing both piano and organ and directing church and school choirs for 15 years.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Clifton was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert L White. She is survived by her daughters, Kelle Thrash (Steve Thrash) and Robyn White (Steve Yester); and three grandchildren, Chelsea Blevins (Tyler Blevins), Logan Thrash and Ramsey Thrash.
The family will visit with friends one hour before the 11 a.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, April 24, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, AL 35213. Entombment will follow at Southern Heritage Mausoleum in Pelham, AL. Reverend Father Wayne Herpin will officiate.
