
She was a graduate from Anniston High School and went on to pursue higher education, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her commitment to learning and helping others led her to a rewarding career in education with Jefferson County Schools, where she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues throughout the years.
On June 27, 1958, Gwynn married the love of her life, Charles “Buddy” Bates. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and shared memories, creating a home filled with love and encouragement.
A faithful member of the Homewood and Riverchase Church of Christ, she lived her life guided by her Christian faith and a servant’s heart. She found great joy in traveling, preparing meals for those she loved, and spending quiet moments with a good book. She was a devoted Auburn fan who proudly cheered for the Tigers through every season.
Above all else, she treasured her family. Her greatest happiness came from spending time with those she loved, celebrating life’s milestones, and creating lasting memories. She will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, unwavering support, and the love she so generously shared with family and friends.
Gwynn is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Clay and Nancy Viola Strickland, loving husband of 65 years, Charles "Buddy" Bates, her brothers, Dr. Lyldon Strickland (Martha Jean), and Dr. Chalmus Strickland.
She leaves behind her children, Barry (Sisty), Brenda (Paul), Brian (Christie); grandchildren, Connor, Kelsey (Chris), Hagan (Rachel), Laura, Steven ( Carrie), Jaclyn (Parker), Alex (Elizabeth), Matthew, Taylor (Antonella), Alan (Lindsay), great grandchildren, Hudson, Harris, Bates, Emma, Hailey, Tessa, Aurelia, James, and Roland, brother, Dr. Joe Strickland (Gail), sister in law, Diane Strickland and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Riverchase Church of Christ from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a service beginning at noon in the Gym at the Church. A private family graveside will conclude the service.
