A resident of Birmingham, AL, she is survived by her loving children Harry (Carol), Ed (Linda), Bob (Karen) Caldwell, all of Birmingham, AL, Bill Caldwell, San Francisco, and Jane (Charles) Stonecipher, Seattle, and their children and grandchildren, who gave her such joy. She was the proud mother to four Eagle Scouts.
Preceded in death by her beloved first husband, Harry Edwin Caldwell, Sr., and sisters Laurie, Margaret, and Sue, and her second husband, David Clyde Riley, she is also mourned by cherished nieces and nephews; by her stepfamily of David (Laura) Riley, Warren, MI, and Margaret (James) Oswald, Rochester Hills, MI, and Clyde's cherished niece Frances (David) Bryant, Comanche, TX.
Helen attended Slocomb High School, then the University of Alabama where she was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta premedical honor society. She worked in the Research Department of Anatomy in Birmingham for six years from 1947 to 1953 and was accepted for medical school but married Harry Edwin Caldwell, Sr., instead on August 31, 1950. She pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she was in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She worked for the Department of Social Security for 10 years.
After reacquainting with classmate David Clyde Riley at their 50-year high school reunion, Helen and David married on June 21, 2002. She always instructed her granddaughters to "Be nice to those boys you are going to high school with - You might marry them 50 years from now!" A caring, giving, loving role model for her children, family and friends, she will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2018, and at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2018 with the service following at 11 a.m., at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, AL.
