Known by many as Lowell, he was born on December 20, 1945 in Vernon, AL, to Herbert and Iva Mae Sanford Rushing. He grew up in Birmingham on 4th Court West and attended Ensley High School, graduating in 1963. After high school, he worked at Tennessee Coal and Iron (TCI) in Fairfield, AL. In 1970, he left TCI and went to court reporting school in Texas and Florida. He became a court reporter later the same year and began work with Alabama Court Reporting in Birmingham. In 1975, he officially began his career with the State of Alabama Judicial System, where he was assigned to the Criminal Court Division in Jefferson County. There he was responsible for transcribing the testimony of witnesses and argument of lawyers for the next 35 years, until he retired in 2010. Ever curious and looking for new challenges, he had recently qualified to be a guard and driver for Security Engineers in Birmingham; and over the last three months was employed as a shuttle driver for Region’s Bank, in Riverchase. A man of varied interests, he enjoyed motorcycles and rode a 1997 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Standard. He also had a lifelong fondness of weightlifting and was a constant fixture at Nautilus Gym in Homewood, then Barrett’s Gym in Hoover and finally Alabaster YMCA. He was a bit of a foodie and was very good at grilling, especially steaks. He loved music and enjoyed classic rock and blues. He loved to laugh, enjoyed comedy and encouraged a good sense of humor. He loved animals and spent countless hours outdoors with his beloved Australian Shepherd Maggie Mae. He is survived by his wife Ann Wadsworth Rushing, son Dennis Rushing (Kendra), daughter Kristie Rushing, son Jared Rushing, grandson Jacob Rushing, granddaughters Sarah Rushing and Emily Rushing, brother Lewis Rushing (Margaret), brother Bobby Rushing (Lynn), niece Brownie Rushing Hill (Joey), nephew Brett Rushing (Megan), in-laws Joe and Gloria Wadsworth, brother-in-law Mike Wadsworth ,and of course his Maggie Mae. He is preceded in death by his mother Iva Mae, 2004 and father Herbert, 2008. Visitation is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday April 13 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL, with a memorial service commencing at 3:00 p.m.
