James Robert Akins Sr.
December 14, 1932 – March 7, 2018
James Robert Akins, Sr., 85, of Birmingham, AL, and formerly of Bossier City, LA, entered peacefully into the loving hands of our Lord on March 7, 2018.
Services for Mr. Akins will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Rose-Neath Bossier Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Daniel Nelson. Interment will follow at Rose-Neath Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Mr. Akins was born in Plain Dealing, Louisiana on December 14, 1932. He was one of two children born to the late N. P. Akins and Carrie G. Salter. After graduating from Belcher High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) during the Korean Conflict. He also served as a Caddo Parish Sheriff’s deputy and was later employed in the automobile business. Prior to his retirement in 1998, he was the head of maintenance with D & B Management. He resided in Bossier City most of his adult life. He was an active Mason at the Grand Masonic Lodge of Louisiana Temple No. 448 in Bossier City. He and his wife Marian moved to Alabama in 2001, where they were active members of the Helena United Methodist Church. Mr. Akins is preceded in death by his wife of 17 years, Mary G. Akins; a brother, Clyde P. Akins; and a son, James R. Akins, Jr.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 31 years, Marian H. Akins; daughter, Patti A. Akins of Shreveport, LA; sons, Nicholas K. Akins and wife Donna of New Albany, OH, Richard N. Akins and wife Danette of Pelham, AL.
Jim is also survived by grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Akins, Michael Cade, and Andrew and Marianne Akins; and one great-grandson, Thompson Akins.
Mr. Akins had a great sense of humor, a gentle care for children, and strong devotion to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
