James A. “Jim” Fullerton, age 98, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully on Friday, November 6, 2020 after a short illness.

Born in Mars, Pennsylvania, he moved to Rochester, New York at a young age, graduating from Jefferson High. On July 18, 1943, he married Doris I. Horswell in Dyersburg, Tennessee while undergoing advanced flight training.

Jim served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a bombardier on B-17’s and was shot down in October 1943 while returning from a mission over Germany. He was captured and spent 19 months in a German prison camp before he was liberated in 1945.

Upon returning to Rochester, he graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Chemical Engineering and resumed his employment with Eastman Kodak, retiring in 1983 after 42 years. After retirement, he moved to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia where he spent his time fishing, golfing, and gardening.

After Doris’ death, Jim moved to Birmingham to be closer to family. An avid golfer, reader and poker player, he loved to sit at the poker table with his retirement buddies.

In addition to Doris, his wife of 60 years, Jim is predeceased by his son, James; parents, Alexander and Myrtle Fullerton; and five brothers, Dean, Charles, Paul, William, and Albert (Duke).

Jim is survived by his sons, John (Jayne) Fullerton of Sterrett, Alabama and Dean (Kim) Fullerton of Kingwood, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his long time companion, Jane Lasater.

Funeral services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Semper Fi & America’s Fund.
