Growing up in West End, Leon graduated West End High School. He worked for International Harvester as a salesman for 24 years.
Leon was a bigger-than-life kind of person. With him, there was no middle ground. Everything he did was enormous! He had a huge love for people and was always ready to help and always in a big way when he became aware of a need. He loved to see children's eyes light up with the treats he always had for them. He was an avid Bama fan and turned tailgating into a new dimension by inviting everybody who walked by to come on in and enjoy the food and fellowship. In the stands, he would call the hot dog boy over and buy hot dogs for everyone around.
Leon loved his farm in Chilton County and could be found there atop his big tractor making the place immaculate. All were welcome to come pick blueberries, catch huge catfish or just enjoy the view along with some old-fashioned southern home cooking. He had a love for dogs, always taking in strays. Last count, there were 24 dogs enjoying the good life on the Lucas Farm! They ate better than some people as he would bring them a big sack of sausage and biscuits.
Leon was predeceased by his first wife, Alice Burgin Lucas; his parents, Vera and Cecil Leroy Lucas; and his brother, Donald Lucas. Survivors include Leon's wife, Becky Robinson Lucas; daughter, Julie (Ekkehard Bonatz); and grandchildren, Caleb Croushorn and Katie Croushorn.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 8, 2020 from 10-11 a.m. at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL, immediately followed by A Service of Remembrance for Leon at 11 a.m. at the funeral home's chapel. The private gravesite committal service will be at Valhalla Cemetery in Bessemer, AL.
