Jim graduated in 1973 from Caldwell High School in Columbus, MS and then went on to Mississippi State University, where he graduated in 1979 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity and also a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Before settling in Birmingham, Jim was a landscape architect in Texas as well as Nashville, TN. He was a landscape planner with the Shelby County Commission and designed projects throughout Shelby County including Heardmont Park, Gorman, Boothon, Beeswax, Cahaba Lily, Veteran’s Park, Alabama National Cemetery, as well as many others before retiring in 2013.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James “Jimmy” Phillips, Sr. and Sarah Younger Phillips.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Mockensturm Phillips; son, Ryan James Phillips; brother, “Dow” Phillips; and sister, Sarah Elizabeth “Beth” Riley.
The family will receive friends at a visitation from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL. A celebration of Jim’s life will begin at 4pm at Southern Heritage.
