James Earl Pope

James was born on April 5, 1951, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was a man defined by his incredible work ethic, deep love for his family, and determination. From an early age, James possessed an extraordinary drive. He began selling newspapers as a young boy and carried that dedication into a 40-year career with the Birmingham News & Birmingham Post-Herald, ultimately serving as the downtown newspaper distributor and manager of street sales. Later in life, he continued serving his community through six years of work with the LifeSouth Community Blood Bank. One of his proudest personal achievements came in 1995, when, after leaving high school in the 10th grade to work, he dedicated himself to earning his GED—a testament to his lifelong resolve and grit.

In 1973, while working at the Pitt Grill, James met the love of his life, Susan Reinsch. The two were married and spent 52 years building a life and family grounded in devotion and support. James lived for those he loved, and there was nothing he would not do to help his immediate and extended family.

James was a passionate lifelong fan of Alabama Crimson Tide football, and his love for the game started early. As a kid, he sold game-day programs just to catch a glimpse of his team in person. He also found great joy and comfort in Southern Gospel music, especially the classic harmonies of the Chuck Wagon Gang. He loved watching movies, and even owned and operated two video rental stores in Homewood and Mobile during the 1980s.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Reinsch Pope; his son, Steven Pope, and wife LaDona; his daughter, Carolyn Bunch, and husband Shawn; his cherished grandchildren, Chase, Finley, Carly, Shepherd, and Silas; his brothers, Joe Pope, and wife Becky; & George Pope; as well as numerous dear cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, R.V. and Beulah Pope; his sister, Lois Faye; and his brothers, Thomas, Jerry, and Robert Pope Sr.

A visitation to honor and celebrate James's life will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Monday, August 31, 2026 from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm with service following at 6:00 pm.

His steadfast spirit, tireless work ethic, and love for his family will be missed dearly and remembered always.
