Nell was a proud Native American as a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Atmore, Alabama. She grew up in the Atmore area and graduated from Escambia County High School.
Nell’s high school sweetheart, McDavid Ward, became her husband and companion for 50 years until his passing in 2002. Living in various places early in their marriage, they settled in Montgomery, Alabama, where their daughters were born and raised. She was devoted to Jesus, serving in many leadership roles at Ridgecrest, Woodley, and Thorington Road Baptist churches.
Nell enjoyed a successful career for 22 years at Regions Bank. She retired as Benefits Officer in 1996.
Nell moved to Birmingham in 2004 and lived there with her family, who treated her like a queen. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, and loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grand dog Pablo, as well as watching Alabama football, reading, and playing computer Solitaire.
Nell was very well taken care of in her later years as her health declined. The family especially thanks the Somerby Memory Care staff, Dr. Blake Perry, and the staff at the MedHelp 280 office.
Nell was predeceased by her parents, James Samuel and Lillie Belle Madison, and her sister Grace Louise Dees (Steve).
Survivors include Nell's sister, Shirley Barnette Gordy (Richard); brother, James Harold Madison (Beverly); sister, Rose Catherine Knight (Brian); two daughters, Wendi Ward Rush (John) and Lynn Ward Stowe (Joel); six grandchildren, Jennifer Consuegra, Caroline Corso (Mario), Ben Consuegra, Madison Thompson, Kristen Consuegra, and R.J. Thompson (Julianne); and four great-grandchildren, Presleigh Martinez, Weston Martinez, Campbell Corso, and Charlotte Corso.
