With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jeannette Gutkowski, who died peacefully at the age of 86. Jeannette was a lively spirit whose love for family and faith shone brightly, even in her final years as she bravely faced the challenges of Alzheimer's disease.
Jeannette was a devout Catholic and attended Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, where she was very involved as a parishioner, particularly during their annual July 4th "Trash and Treasure" event. She had a quick wit and would relish in a lively debate on politics or religion. Jeannette had a keen eye for antiques and jewelry and enjoyed frequenting flea markets on the weekends, especially in Destin with her niece Cindy. She loved nature and could often be found enjoying a sunny day on her back porch swing, delighting in the songs of the birds and the bloom of each petal.
The most important part of Jeanette's life was her love of Jesus Christ and her beloved family.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 68 years, Raymond Gutkowski, her daughter Lori Culotta, son Ted Gutkowski (Sherri), and daughter Susan Raby; grandchildren Lauren, Michael, Courtney, Caitlin, and Madeleine; and great-granddaughter Birdie. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Woolley, twin sister Janice, sisters Elizabeth, June, Edna, and Sybil, and brothers Kendall and James.
Though Alzheimer's may have dimmed her memories, it could never extinguish the spark she brought into our lives. The memories Jeannette made in this life will be carried on in the hearts of those who loved her. Her legacy is one of faith, fortitude and perseverance. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Jeanette's family would like to extend a very special word of thanks to her caregivers, Tamikia and Ahnya Foster, who have become like family over the past several years. We will always be grateful for your dedication and compassion.
A funeral Mass for Jeannette will be held on Tuesday, July 1 at 10:30am, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Homewood, AL. The Rosary will be said at 9:30am, with a visitation immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America or Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.
