

Mr. Satterwhite graduated from Boyden High School in 1955 and Catawba College, Salisbury, N.C. in 1959 with a degree in Psychology and Sociology. He received his Masters of Science in Social Work from the University Of Tennessee School Of Social Work in 1965. He was a Licensed Certified Social Worker in the state of Alabama and a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. Mr. Satterwhite was a veteran of the U. S. Army.
Mr. Satterwhite was a social worker with the Department of Veteran Affairs for forty years. He worked for the VA in Winston Salem and Asheville, N.C., Fort Harrison, Montana, and his last thirty-one years before retiring in 2006, as the Chief of Social Work Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama.
Throughout his career, Mr. Satterwhite was involved in social work at the local, state, and national level. He was a member of the Alabama Society of Health Care Social Workers; the National Association of Social Workers; the Academy of Certified Social Workers; the Association of VA Social Workers; and served for ten years on the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners. He was named VA Social Worker of the Year in 1998, designated as a VA Social Work Jill Manske Pioneer in 2003, and inducted into the Association of VA Social Workers Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2009 he received the Association of Social Work Boards Sunny Andrews Award for outstanding service to Regulatory Boards. In 2010, the AVASW Hall of Fame Award was named after him. Mr. Satterwhite served on numerous committee and boards during his social work career including Daniel Cason’s Kid’s Music Ministry, Traveler’s Aid, the Society of Social Work Leaders Advocacy Committee, VA Social Work Leadership Council and numerous other committees within VA social work. Mr. Satterwhite was a Preceptor in the Social Work Leadership Training program and served as a mentor to many VA social workers. He was also instrumental in the development of VA’s computerized Social Work Data and Information Management program. After retirement he continued as a Volunteer/Consultant to the VA Social Work National Office in Washington DC and performed contract work for the VA’s Employee Education System in Birmingham. After serving as a spontaneous volunteer during the 2011 Alabama tornados, he became a mental health trainer for the Birmingham Area Chapter o the American Red Cross.
Mr. Satterwhite was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, the Deeper Life Sunday School class and served as President of both the Homewood and Pelham Lion’s Club
Survivors include his spouse of 58 years, Jean Singer Satterwhite; three daughters, Ashley Adams of Nashville, Tennessee; Alison (Todd) Craig of Alabaster; Alabama, Amy Self of Helena, Alabama; a brother, Dan (Gypsy) of Asheville, NC, and seven grandchildren Morgan, Paul, Matt (Nashville), Nolan, Emma, Lauren and Caroline (Birmingham).
Services will be Thursday 11-12-2020 at 12:30pm in the Sanctuary at Briarwood
