Joan Townsend Van De Veer, age 79, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away Friday morning, October 13, 2017. She was born on November 6, 1937 in Manhattan, New York, and was raised in Union Beach, New Jersey.
Joan was employed as an interior designer in New York before coming 24 years ago to live in Alabama, where she has been a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, Birmingham. She was predeceased by her parents, Richard Henry Townsend and Beatrice Lang Townsend.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Kohut Gray (Tim); one son, James Matthew Kohut; eight grandchildren, Andy Gray, Alex Gray, Tyler Kohut, Shayla Kohut, Conner Kohut, Christopher Kohut, Jordan Kohut, and Nicholas Kohut; and one sister, Frances Townsend Brown.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 2017 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7340 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242. The graveside service will be later at CloverLeaf Park Cemetery in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey.
