Joe Calhoun, 93 of Hoover, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 18, 2017. He joined the Navy in 1939 and served in the D-Day invasion of WWII and as Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS New York and the Borum. He returned to marry his sweetheart, and they recently celebrated 72 years of marriage. Mr. Calhoun also helped form the City of Hoover by serving in city government as well as a volunteer fireman. He was a dedicated Christian and family man, and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time and holidays with his loved ones. Mr. Calhoun is survived by his wife, Eulala Calhoun; sons, Ricky J. Calhoun (Diane) and Brian Calhoun (Marie); daughter, Tina C. Quinnelly (David); brother, Jim Calhoun; grandchildren, Philip Quinnelly (Kara), Brooke Payne (Caleb) and Preston Calhoun (Jessica); and great grandson, Warner Lee Quinnelly. The celebration of Joe's life will be at 1pm on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at noon. Burial will be at Southern Heritage.
