A lifelong Birmingham resident, he grew up in Edgewood and was a 1948 graduate of Shades Cahaba High School. A degree in Industrial Management followed from Auburn University and he enjoyed fraternity life in Kappa Alpha Order. His love for the Auburn Tigers was lifelong. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as Captain and fighter jet pilot during the Korean conflict where we was stationed in French Morocco and later, Clovis, New Mexico. After completing his military service and receiving his honorary discharge he began his professional career as an Industrial Engineer with U.S. Steel, Fairfield Works until he retired in 1986. He started a second career as a Sales Engineer with J.B. Systems, LaGrange, GA. Life was busy raising four children, but Joe found time to be involved in community and church activities and making lots of friends along the way. There were many memorable beach getaways with family and friends that will be cherished. A founding parishioner at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Joe was devout in his faith and served as President of the Parish Council for several years and as an usher for many years as well. His wit was with him to the end and it endeared all that crossed his path.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Barbara, his daughters, Lynn Mosley (Jerry), Sandy Bliss, Kelly Dunaway (Joe); grandchildren Taylor Mosley (Darcy), Erin Waldron (Adam), Kristen Mosley Price (Jake), Kathryn Floyd Farnham (James), Christopher Floyd, Joseph Leberte (Kristi), Grace Lancaster, Matthew Leberte: great grandchildren Oliver, Amelia, and Abe Mosley, Audrey Waldron, Wyatt and Dawson Farnham, Blakely Lancaster, Brent Weiss; brother, Angelo Peter Leberte, Jr. (Kathy) and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Angelo and Mary, brother John Anthony, sister Mary Frances Satterfield (Albert), son Joseph Vincent Leberte, and grandson Grant Alexander Denson.
Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers that enriched his life in his waning years: Comfort Care nurses, Lipford Homecare sitters, especially Karen Baker & Yolanda Patton, Pat Kiser, Eucharistic Minister, and Mike Jones, personal PT. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations can be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Thursday, March 9 @ 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception lunch. A private family graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Southern Heritage.
