John Allen Bjurman Sr. (Johnny) was born on January 10th, 1936 and departed to his heavenly home on September 6, 2025, where he was reunited with the love of his life for 70 years, Jo Ellan Sanders Bjurman. They joined together and grew a family with the goal of training them up in the Lord. Johnny was a dedicated husband and father who always worked hard to provide for his family. He led by example and made sure he took his family to church. Johnny is survived by his four children: Vickie Atkinson (David), Allen Bjurman (Brenda), Robbin Mckinney (Glen), and Heidi Callicott (Jeff). The Legacy of loving the Lord that Johnny impressed upon his children has been passed on to his grandchildren: Daniel Atkinson (Heather), April Cullom (James), Nicholas Atkinson (Meg), Allie Harris (Kyle), Molly Melcher (Brett), Adam Mckinney (Anna), Jarred Mckinney (Tala), Luke Mckinney (Peyton), and Zachary Callicott. Johnny took pride in knowing that this generational legacy has been passed down once again with 10 great-grandchildren: Miles, Gracie, Brady, Petra, Judah, Levi, Mabel, Silas, Duke, and Libby.
Sharing his Christian faith wasn’t limited to his family. Johnny always made sure that he kept a New Testament in either his shirt pocket or the glove compartment of his vehicle. He never wanted to miss out on sharing the Gospel if an opportunity presented itself. He was a long-time member of Green Acres Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School director and teacher, and even helped out in the nursery on occasion. After moving to Alabaster, Johnny and Jo were faithful members at First Baptist Church Alabaster for 38 years, where they made many dear friends.
Johnny’s passions were not limited to his faith and family. He had a love for being a Mr. Fix-It. The first skills he learned were due to his love of cars and motorcycles. Johnny further developed these skills when he served in the Air Force as a jet mechanic. He used all of these skills plus others that he learned to eventually start his own business. Johnny began Action Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Inc. where he specialized in serving commercial businesses from restaurants to grocery stores to installing the equipment for the first Sam’s club in the Birmingham area. Johnny used these skills not only in his work but also as a way to serve others. If anyone was in need, he was ready and willing to jump in and offer help in any way he could. Johnny was quick to put other people’s needs before his own. It was common for him to provide aid to family and friends who were having HVAC, electrical, or plumbing emergencies. Johnny could truly be characterized as having a servant’s heart.
Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ellan Sanderson Bjurman, his parents, Holger Alfred Bjurman and Clara Etta Rothe Bjurman, and his brother Lloyd Alfred Bjurman.
Many thanks to Aveanna Hospice, especially Nurse Kat for the amazing care she gave our dad as well as the compassion and support she showed our family. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with a service to follow at 11:00 am First Baptist Church of Alabaster. Burial will conclude at Highland Memorial Gardens in Bessemer.
