

John Cecil Patterson of Calera, AL died on December 6, 2014. He was born in Opelika, AL on November 30, 1931 to Fannie Edwards Patterson and John William Patterson. He was a graduate of Chilton County High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy. Following his tour of duty he attended and graduated from Auburn University in 1955 and began his life long career as an accountant.
John and his family moved in 1961 to an unincorporated area of Jefferson County. He was very instrumental in petitioning for this area to become what is now known as Hoover. He began his accounting practice in the Green Valley area of Hoover, then years later moved his office to Calera. He was a charter member of Green Valley Baptist Church and the Hoover Lion’s Club. John served as a member and past President of the Alabama Association of Accountants, was a member and past President of the Birmingham Chapter of the Alabama Association of Accountants, served on the Alabama Board of Accountancy and was a member and served on the Board of the Alabama Society of Enrolled Agents. He was a member of the Alabama Cattleman’s Association and past member of the Birmingham Jaycee’s.
His interests were diversified and some of his passions included his accounting practice, two farms, Auburn football and basketball, traveling, his Polled Hereford cattle, his dogs and watching old Western programs - particularly John Wayne movies.
John was a devoted husband, loving father and adored by his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Sue; and son, John Cecil Patterson, Jr., known to all as Jody. He is survived by his daughter, Camille Patterson Elliott; son-in-law, Paul Murphy Elliott; grandchildren, Jon Ingram Staggs, Jr. and Jordan Camille Staggs; good friend and helpmate, John (Pat) Bacher; and many others. John will be missed by all.
His family will receive friends Wednesday, December 10 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home at 10 a.m. with a celebration of his life immediately following at 11 a.m. John will be buried in his family plot at Chestnut Baptist Church Cemetery in Cooper, AL.
