At age 12, Johnnie and her family moved to North Carolina when her father went to work on the first of many road jobs. Johnnie went to many high schools as the family followed work. In Georgia, she met William Ralph Hall in class and stayed in touch for the next couple of years.
While at Fort Bliss, he wrote and proposed marriage. Johnnie rode the train to El Paso and walked into Mexico to marry since she and Ralph were too young to do so in Texas. After World War 2 and college, they lived in six towns in Florida where Ralph was an educator and Johnnie worked as a practical nurse. When he joined the FBI, they went back to Alabama for a short stay, then on to Colorado and Pennsylvania before a move to Arlington, Virginia. They moved back to Alabama in 1977.
Johnnie was a successful real estate agent and property owner. In the early 1950's she and Ralph, but especially Johnnie, got involved in the Florida State Folk Festival and later in the 1970s, the Northern Virginia Folk Festival. Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church was a spiritual home to Johnnie and Ralph for years before she moved to Montevallo, Alabama to be near her son, William Ralph Hall, Jr., now deceased as is his wife Martha and son John.
Johnnie's trip through life was long, full, and varied. That trip came to an end on March 16, 2026 in Bessemer, Alabama after an illness. At 101 years old and never to be forgotten, she was loved by family and friends.
Johnnie is survived by a son, David Stewart Hall, and his wife, Rebecca.
The funeral for Johnnie Dell Hall will be Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Visitation will be 12 noon to 1 p.m., and the service will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
In memory of Johnnie, please be kind to someone today!
