Joyce Silvers Garrison

January 18, 1933 – February 3, 2021
Obituary of Joyce Silvers Garrison
IN THE CARE OF

Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery

Joyce Silvers Garrison, 88, of Hoover, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. She was born in Rutherfordton, North Carolina on January 18, 1933. She was one of five children.

Joyce grew up in Black Mountain, North Carolina. She attended Black Mountain High School, where she was a cheerleader and honor student. High school was also where she met the love of her life, Paul Garrison. They both graduated from Black Mountain High School in 1952.

Joyce attended Wake Forest College in North Carolina while Paul attended Berea College in Kentucky. The long distance romance soon got old and Paul and Joyce were married. They both transferred to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to finish college.

After college, Joyce and Paul lived in Atlanta, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee before moving to Birmingham, Alabama.

Joyce was a long-time member of Green Valley Baptist Church in Hoover. She loved playing golf and bridge. Her golf and bridge buddies often took golf trips to the beaches of Florida or the mountains of North Carolina, where it was golf during the day and bridge at night. In Joyce’s later years, the golf trips were replaced with trips to the closest casino and a little slot machine action. Joyce and Paul vacationed in places like Arizona, Maine, and Florida but their favorite escape was to Black Mountain, where they had built a second home. Joyce’s greatest joy, however, was spending time with her sweetheart, Paul, her children, and grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Franklin Garrison; her father, Corbitt Lee Silvers; her mother, Ida Mae Silvers; brother, Jack; and sisters, Merle and Lena.

Survivors include Joyce's sister, Nelda Edwards of Hoover; sons, Phillip Garrison (Jackie) of Black Mountain and Jim Garrison (Kaye) of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; grandchildren, Miranda Garrison of New York, New York, Paul Garrison of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Bradley Garrison (Alexandra) of Black Mountain; step-grandchildren, Blake Campbell (Dena) of Marietta, Georgia and Scott Campbell of Hoover; great-grandchild, Millie Campbell; and a host of nieces and nephews who loved and adored their aunt.

The private graveside service will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama.
