Julia Sandlin Brasher, age 80, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on January 31, 1945, to Travis William and Ella Maude Sandlin in Jasper, Alabama. Julia’s early years were spent at the Alabama School for the Deaf in Talladega, where she received her education. She later furthered her training at the International Academy, focusing on keypunch operating and computer programming.
Julia was an active member of St. John Episcopal for the Deaf, where she found a sense of community and connection.
On July 1, 1966, Julia married her beloved husband, Harvey Bascum Brasher, in Birmingham, Alabama. Together, they raised two daughters, Sandy Brasher and Chanda Thomas, who were the pride of her life.
Julia dedicated 28 years to her career as a Data Specialist at AT&T. Outside of her work, she was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and joy, leaving an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Julia had a passion for nature, and her art—especially her beautiful flower paintings—reflected her deep gratitude for God's creation.
Throughout their almost 59 years of marriage, Julia and Harvey created a life full of adventure, laughter, and love. In retirement, Julia found joy in traveling, attending her grandchildren’s activities, and gathering around the family table for meals. She was the heart of the family—a constant source of support, wisdom, and love. Her gentle spirit and warm presence made everyone feel like family, and her kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.
Julia was a proud member of the Pioneer Volunteer Organization at AT&T and received the esteemed Gold Award in Girl Scouts for her dedication.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Travis and Ella Sandlin, and her nephew, Jonathan Brett Elmore.
Julia is survived by her devoted husband, Harvey Brasher; her daughters, Sandy Brasher (Lisa) and Chanda Thomas; her grandchildren, Reed Thomas (Caroline), Ella Thomas, Garrett Brasher, Segen Lister, Noah Lister, and Hansen Lister; her sisters, Bobbie Rogers and Linda Elmore; and a host of nieces and nephews.
