Karen Elaine (Sullivan) Brannum

Karen Elaine Sullivan Brannum, affectionately known as “Karo,” passed away on July 26, 2026, at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply. She was 74 years old.

Karen was born at West End Baptist Hospital and grew up in the West End community of Birmingham. She attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and graduated from West End High School in 1969.

She met the love of her life, Steve Brannum, on a baseball field on the Fourth of July when they were just 14 years old. They married on July 17, 1970, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Birmingham. Just days before her passing, Karen and Steve celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Early in their marriage, Karen worked to help put Steve through Auburn University, beginning a lifetime defined by hard work, loyalty, sacrifice, and service to the people she loved. Over the years, she worked at U.S. Pipe, served as a preschool teacher at St. Mark’s, and worked as the office manager at Birmingham Dance Theatre for 30 years.

Karen’s greatest calling, however, was loving and caring for her family. She was the devoted wife of Steve and the loving mother of Mendy Brannum Walden and her husband, Forrest, and Lori Brannum Hunter and her husband, Ben. She was “Karo” to her seven grandchildren. Steve’s middle name gave him his own grandparent name, “Wheeler,” and together Karo and Wheeler created a family rooted in faith, love, hospitality, and time spent around the table.

Karo’s greatest joy was watching her children and grandchildren thrive. She was present for every game, performance, milestone, and ordinary moment she could possibly attend. If you did not want Karo to show up, you simply could not tell her about it.

She loved fiercely and served tirelessly. She was always thinking about what someone else might need, whether it was laundry, a favorite snack, a home-cooked meal, an errand, a word of encouragement, or a hug. Nothing was too small or too much trouble. She knew everyone’s favorite foods, as well as the foods they did not like, and she always went the extra mile to make sure each person felt known and cared for. If there was one thing you could always count on Karo to do, it was to feed you.

One recent story captures her heart perfectly. When her son-in-law opened a new business, Karo attended the grand opening. At some point during the celebration, she quietly slipped behind the counter and began washing dishes without asking permission. No one dared stop her because everyone knew she was exactly where she wanted to be: serving others and loving every minute of it.

Karo was hospitable, selfless, loyal, and kindhearted. She was also a passionate Auburn football fan who attended every home game and created the most welcoming tailgate at their RV. Anyone and everyone was welcome to eat at her table. Her competitive spirit was perhaps most visible when one of her grandchildren was playing sports. She was a relentless critic of referees, especially if she believed one of her grandchildren had been slighted in any way.

For more than 30 years, Karen was an active member of Mountain Top Community Church, where she served as a greeter and usher. Her faith in Jesus shaped the way she lived, loved, welcomed, and served others. She believed that no act of kindness was insignificant and that people were worth showing up for.

Karen leaves behind a legacy of hard work, hospitality, family meals, faithful service, and putting others first. She taught her family that showing love is more than something we say. Love notices. Love shows up. Love serves. Love feeds people. Love makes room at the table.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry Sullivan and Loraine Sullivan, and her brother, Pat Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Steve Brannum; her daughters, Mendy Brannum Walden (Forrest), and Lori Brannum Hunter, (Ben); her seven beloved grandchildren, Caroline Walden Callicoat, (Quinton), Brooke Walden, David Walden, Beni Walden, Addie Hunter, Lilli Hunter, and Cami Hunter; her siblings, Connie Sullivan LaRock (Joe), Joe Sullivan (Ann), and Bill Sullivan, (Palma); her sister-in-law, Jean Hicks Sullivan; and a host of extended family members and friends who were blessed by her love.

Though her family is heartbroken by her sudden passing, they find hope in their faith in Jesus Christ and in the assurance that this is not goodbye. They take comfort in knowing that Karo is now in the presence of her Savior. Her life was a beautiful reflection of the words found in “How Great Thou Art,” a hymn she loved, and her family will carry her faith and example forward for generations to come.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Mountain Top Church, 225 Centerview Drive, Vestavia, AL 35216 with a service to celebrate her life following at noon.
