After she graduated from Haddonfield High School, “Kay” was married to George Kessler Lummis on June 20, 1959. They started their family in Akron, Ohio, and raised three children, Debbie, Amy, and Greg. The family moved with Goodyear to several plants in Ohio, then to North Chicago and subsequently to Gadsden, Alabama, where they finished raising their children through their high school years. While living in Gadsden, Kay received her BS in Early Education from Jacksonville State University and taught kindergarten for several years at Episcopal Christian School.
After George retired in September 1991, he and Kay traveled throughout the United States and to several foreign countries. She loved her family and enjoyed many camping trips with them, along with annual trips to Haddonfield to be with extended family and later to the beach in Destin, Florida with their kids and grandchildren.
Kay’s other passion was the mission work she and George participated in as part of the Global Mission Team at Briarwood PCA. She was active with her Sunday class and participated in many senior activities as part of the Trailblazers at Briarwood.
After George’s death in March 2022, Kay moved to the Danbury retirement community where she lived out the remainder of her life. She loved the Lord and was an avid prayer warrior for her family, friends, many ministries and missionaries. Her favorite Bible verse was Proverbs 3:5-8: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.”
Kay was preceded in death by her husband, George Kessler Lummis; her father, Richard Lloyd Horter; and her mother, Ruth Catherine Horter. She is survived by her sister, Arline Spoenlein; her three children, Debbie Glover (John), Amy Curtis (Johnny), and Greg Lummis (Barbara); her grandchildren, Chris, Megan, Ryan, Reed, Shelby, Michael, Taylor, Katie, Reese, and Rebecca; and great-grandchildren, Olivia, Kamran, and Sophia.
Visitation will be at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, from 1-2 p.m., followed by A Service of Thanks to God for Kay at 2 p.m. and a reception at Ridout's Southern Heritage, Pelham. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
