Kathryn Kizer Robinson of Atlanta, Georgia passed away peacefully on Friday, September 10, 2021 at the age of 96. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Basil C. and Kathryn R. Willingham. Her life was dedicated to the service of the Lord.
Kathryn earned her degree in Mathematics from Winthrop and began her career as a teacher in Greenville. In 1961 she moved to Atlanta, serving 15 years as Director of Children’s Education for Wieuca Road Baptist Church (Church at Wieuca), and later at the University Baptist Church (Christ Journey Church) in Coral Gables, Florida. At the time of her retirement, Kathryn was in Birmingham, Alabama working as the editor of a preschool teachers’ magazine published by the Baptist Woman’s Missionary Union.
Kathryn looked forward to the opportunities to instruct teachers and to speak in different states. She also authored or co-authored eight books for children or about teaching children, served two years as president of the Samford University Auxiliary, travelled with foreign missions to China, Brazil, Romania, and Liberia, and served as a deacon at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church in Birmingham.
Kathryn was married for 50 years to the Reverend Lawton E. Kizer, Jr., who passed away in 1998. She returned to Atlanta in 2005 after marrying her second husband, longtime family friend L.C. Robinson, who passed in 2014. For the last 14 years, Kathryn enjoyed senior living at Lenbrook, where she had many friends and social activities, and appreciated the attentive staff.
She is survived by two sons, Chuck Kizer (Sally) and Russell Kizer (Carol); five grandchildren, John Kizer (Dana), Sarah Curry (Brian), Meredith McDonald (Drew), Madeline Cowan (Jaden), and Meleigha Swatek (Hunter); two great-grandchildren, Reese and Wyatt McDonald; and four nieces, Linda Hawkins (Barney), Donna Askins (Romie), Brenda Drewry (David), and Mary Crittendon (Eddie).
Also dear to her was the family of her second husband, daughter Betty Wickstrom (Phil) and son Forrest Robinson (Karen); five grandchildren, Philip Wickstrom (Crystal), Matt Robinson, Amy Brown (Brandon), Betsy Rothermel (John), and the late Andy Robinson; and great-grandchildren, Woods Robinson, Jack, Rex, and Brooks Rothermal, Harlow and Nolia Brown, and Philip Wickstrom III.
Interment will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama, where a celebration of Kathryn’s life is planned for October 2, 2021 at 11 a.m.
